Andrew Safer is a mindfulness meditation instructor and presenter on mindfulness and its applicability to everyday life. He is also an award-winning magazine writer, communications consultant, and program developer. Andrew began mindfulness meditation practice in 1967 after meeting the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki, Roshi at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in California. In 1973 he began studying with the renowned Tibetan Buddhist and Shambhala meditation master Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. Later that year, Chogyam Trungpa appointed Andrew to be the first Coordinator of Rocky Mountain Dharma Center (now Rocky Mountain Shambhala Center). He attended a three-month meditation practice and study program led by Chogyam Trungpa in 1975, continued to study with him until his death in 1987, and has maintained a regular meditation practice since.
Andrew began serving as a meditation instructor and Shambhala Training Assistant Director with Shambhala International in 1992. Currently living in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he presents workshops and gives presentations on mindfulness and awareness meditation practice and their applicability to daily life. He has presented to the Independent Living Resource Centre, New Hope Community Centre, Turnings, Brother T. I. Murphy Centre, Community Youth Network, For the Love of Learning, Welcoming Spiritual Communities, Eastern Health (Ropewalk Lane Office and Pastoral Care and Ethics), Canadian Mental Health Association–Newfoundland and Labrador, CHANNAL, Better Days Support Society, Gonzaga High School, Bishop’s College Youth Awareness Day, and the Faculty of Medicine and the Religious Studies Department at Memorial University. Andrew presents a six-week workshop series on Mindfulness at the Family Life Bureau, Archdiocese of St. John’s and is available for individual consultations on Mindfulness at Aspens & Oaks. He is a member of the faculty of the Atlantic Centre for Contemplative Science and Technology in Halifax.
